Building a Morning Routine That Works—And Sticking to It

So you’ve decided to refresh your mornings—yay, you! But where do you start? Creating a morning routine can feel daunting, especially if you’ve tried (and failed) before. The good news? Your morning doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s.

Let’s explore simple, practical ways to craft a routine that fits your life and, more importantly, feels good.

Start Small
Rome wasn’t built in a day, and your ideal morning routine won’t be either. The key is starting small. Pick one thing—just one—that you can commit to for the next week. Maybe it’s drinking a glass of water as soon as you wake up or taking five deep breaths before reaching for your phone.

When I first began reworking my mornings, I started with a single habit: drink 8oz of water. It wasn’t much, but it made me feel more awake and connected to my body. Over time, I added more elements that felt meaningful—journaling, stretching for 5-10 minutes.

There’s no “right” way to do mornings. It all depends on YOUR mornings. If you have to be out the door by 6am, then an hour routine means you have to get up before 5am. You can go ahead and do that, but it's definitley not for me. :p
Here are a few ideas to inspire you:

  • Meditation: Even 2 minutes can bring a sense of calm.
  • Movement: Stretch, do yoga, or dance it out to your favorite playlist.
  • Mindfulness: Journal, read a motivational quote, or set a daily intention.
  • Nourishment: Sip a comforting drink or eat something nourishing.

The best morning routines are the ones that feel natural to you. Don’t force it—find your flow.

Life happens, and some mornings will inevitably go off the rails. That’s okay. The goal isn’t to follow your routine perfectly every day—it’s to create a structure that supports you most of the time. Remember - YOU'RE HUMAN. Give yourself some damn grace.

If your schedule shifts, adapt your routine. Maybe your usual 20-minute practice shrinks to 5 minutes. Something is always better than nothing.

This week, commit to one new morning habit for 7 days. Keep it small and manageable—something you want to do, not something you think you should do. At the end of the week, reflect: How did it make you feel? What worked? What didn’t?

Remember, your mornings are yours. Start where you are and grow from there.

xoxo
